of “This Time it Counts” and a brief three-year period where the game was
managed differently. Of course I’m obligated to point out Barry Bonds’ two-run
homer in the third, after being robbed on the warning track by Torii Hunter in
the first. The AL trailed 5-2 entering the seventh, but scored four to take the
lead before the NL took it back in the bottom of the frame. Omar Vizquel’s
eighth inning triple tied it up at seven, and from that point forward there was
no further scoring, and after eleven innings it was decided that Freddy Garcia
and Vicente Padilla not be hung out to dry. Bud Selig had quite a coup on his
hands at his Milwaukee All-Star game.</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8304036069818909705.post-52769791582842487182024-03-19T15:25:00.005-04:002024-03-19T15:25:00.134-04:00#343---All-Star Game, 7/10/2001<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitjBmJF6KrnwTzewk8iBDlAccAfrSH9Qu5Xh4dvK_mMR-UCv5C3HYTeZqsnIjVGNbR8-q1TMiFQDScJ1Gqln97Q3q_rbFZw9YPoyPA8n7B0Wpx5Ch_oUkWKXPpgt0XvGfNuM-aXnbMMS7F1QhlTsadIaRBIFRTFOH1RTTArbvBG1tlDq_06DKmi0uL/s2190/343.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2190" data-original-width="1680" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitjBmJF6KrnwTzewk8iBDlAccAfrSH9Qu5Xh4dvK_mMR-UCv5C3HYTeZqsnIjVGNbR8-q1TMiFQDScJ1Gqln97Q3q_rbFZw9YPoyPA8n7B0Wpx5Ch_oUkWKXPpgt0XvGfNuM-aXnbMMS7F1QhlTsadIaRBIFRTFOH1RTTArbvBG1tlDq_06DKmi0uL/s320/343.jpg" width="245" /></a></div> <p></p><p>The AL won this midsummer classic on the strength of three solo homers:
back-to-back shots from Derek Jeter and Magglio Ordonez off Jon Lieber in the
sixth, but most infamously Cal Ripken’s third inning homer off Chan Ho Park.
Ripken celebration was the theme of the day, and my notes suggest that I wasn’t
having it – the note at the very top bemoans the delay “before first pitch for
Gwynn/Ripken waste of time”. Tony Gwynn did not play in this game, while Ripken
was also feted by A-Rod moving him to shortstop for the first inning before
they switched back to their appointed positions in the second. </p>
<p>Rookie Albert Pujols made his All-Star debut, entering at third base in the
bottom of the fifth, drawing a walk in his only PA, and playing second base in
the eighth inning. During the regular season, Pujols’ career at second base
consisted of 3 1/3 innings in one 2008 game. </p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8304036069818909705.post-28026256608218072342024-03-12T15:24:00.004-04:002024-03-12T15:24:00.367-04:00#342---All-Star Game, 7/11/2000<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFEZ4yrhGA-yTXr5uYso1-MfqXRqt1LQ9bcm4Ajn4wHIKPfBhTbAOpyGy_8U_n84XeCHt-c5LU0UGdOVbJDA5b17-MNYUab31D_8q8IV01cYnr5ppBCrZEJJQyuaoK9NLZ2ypCxt65xe27R2KOHfsvVY_jJqGxWliq2qNd6HmeJDL1A6mqxjkZvE-R/s2203/342.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2203" data-original-width="1680" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFEZ4yrhGA-yTXr5uYso1-MfqXRqt1LQ9bcm4Ajn4wHIKPfBhTbAOpyGy_8U_n84XeCHt-c5LU0UGdOVbJDA5b17-MNYUab31D_8q8IV01cYnr5ppBCrZEJJQyuaoK9NLZ2ypCxt65xe27R2KOHfsvVY_jJqGxWliq2qNd6HmeJDL1A6mqxjkZvE-R/s320/342.jpg" width="244" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>If you paid careful attention to last week’s scoresheet, you may note that
2000 marked the second time in three years that David Wells started the
All-Star Game for the AL. In 1998, he was relieved by Roger Clemens, Brad
Radke, and Bartolo Colon plus relievers; this time, he starting nod may be
easier to grasp as he was relieved by James Baldwin, Aaron Sele, and Tim
Hudson. Despite this unimpressive pitching staff, the AL bested the NL 6-3 in
Atlanta when there wasn’t a bizarre civic religion that prevented such a thing.
Derek Jeter was the star, going 3-3 and driving in the go-ahead runs (which
stood up) off Al Leiter in the fourth. </p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8304036069818909705.post-2480838559012032262024-03-05T15:22:00.004-05:002024-03-05T15:22:00.142-05:00#341---All-Star Game, 7/7/1998<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSEZZq6CQHkmT6JvGkTr7bNRp9T2F7nrl0J8Ed_qbradlcdShOkCgRrymuaz1tSMhEHtU4RfTbiLBbLWP8XdwdZBVLOF6qjaQEJs_fEeSOuxKapCVXGPGXsQIhsP1AmdzLf0g49j7i6Pnc-URCpw2GWw3RL9toG8k0n3Lc4F0zYtRd1Nj4HZ7Qlzwf/s2195/341.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2195" data-original-width="1709" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSEZZq6CQHkmT6JvGkTr7bNRp9T2F7nrl0J8Ed_qbradlcdShOkCgRrymuaz1tSMhEHtU4RfTbiLBbLWP8XdwdZBVLOF6qjaQEJs_fEeSOuxKapCVXGPGXsQIhsP1AmdzLf0g49j7i6Pnc-URCpw2GWw3RL9toG8k0n3Lc4F0zYtRd1Nj4HZ7Qlzwf/s320/341.jpg" width="249" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>I will be starting a series of sorts as I post all of the All-Star Game
scoresheets I have, starting with the first I scored in 1998. I will not be
revisiting 1999 (#103) or 2008 (#29), I missed 2003, and we all missed 2020.
Otherwise I think I have an intact set. There are a couple good things about
All-Star scoresheets. One is that keeping them proves that you are scorekeeping
fanatic (although I suppose that having a vanity blog that posts scoresheets
kept over almost thirty years already should suffice on that front). A second
is that they are great snapshots of an era and a moment in time in the game,
something that becomes more apparent with times than instead of being the names
you think about every day as a baseball fan, names like Clemens and Maddux and
Griffey and Piazza and Sheffield and McGwire leap off the page, and names like Erstad
and Durham and O’Neill and Grieve and Kendall and Urbina now strike as more
interesting in many ways than they were in the past, as some of them have
become college coaches and others are reduced to an aging Mike Hargrove
remembering only as the “little black guy from the White Sox” in a radio
interview (Durham) and others have been jailed in tinpot dictatorships.</p>
<p>A few notables from this game, which in true ‘90s fashion was slugfest taken
13-8 by the junior circuit at that most ‘90s of ballparks, Coors Field:</p>
<p>* Roberto Alomar was the MVP, collecting a bunt hit in his first at bat, a
homer later, another single, reaching on an error, and stealing two bases.</p>
<p>* Barry Bonds walked, flied out, then blasted a three-run homer off Bartolo
Colon.</p>
<p>* Alex Rodriguez was voted in as the starter over Derek Jeter in this more
enlightened time, homering in the fifth before Jeter replaced him.</p>
<p>* The AL stole six bases, the NL none. The AL </p>
<p>* Sammy Sosa did not appear in the game; I had to look up that he missed the
game with a sore shoulder, at first wondering whether he had been left off the
All-Star team as he chased Mark McGwire and Roger Maris.</p>
<p>* Jeff Shaw made his first appearance in a Dodger uniform in this game, as
he had just been acquired from Cincinnati. </p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8304036069818909705.post-60761333139856231432024-02-27T15:21:00.004-05:002024-02-27T15:21:00.143-05:00#340---KC @ CLE, 7/24/2020<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJbJk_U3-mJNmDDZnre5c5Kx3ZS1Ht8mb0gv85eq9Z5odoyQCd33nmP6ZBKk9WokkZpWFqhoUwLyoQJ9aFEvJVLUngtySx0PMIqnumB7QBPoKLeLqmTzBw0EmNSDfX2M6LibnA2zH6UjUEMcE1Bblt0qxrLwRY_z9QXOGcOrsEg6MqDoXXaZEBnLV7/s2178/340.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2178" data-original-width="1681" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJbJk_U3-mJNmDDZnre5c5Kx3ZS1Ht8mb0gv85eq9Z5odoyQCd33nmP6ZBKk9WokkZpWFqhoUwLyoQJ9aFEvJVLUngtySx0PMIqnumB7QBPoKLeLqmTzBw0EmNSDfX2M6LibnA2zH6UjUEMcE1Bblt0qxrLwRY_z9QXOGcOrsEg6MqDoXXaZEBnLV7/s320/340.jpg" width="247" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>This was Opening Day of the shortened season for these two teams, and Shane

carried him through 5 2/3 in which he allowed one run on just two hits (Brandon
Moss’ homer provided the run, and Carlos Santana’s double drove him from the
contest), one walk, and one strikeout.<p></p>
<p>Kelvin Hererra fanned three Indians in the seventh, but in the eighth Wade
Davis issued two walks and a two-out single to Michael Brantley. Meanwhile,
Indians pitchers retired the last seventeen Royals in order. The eighth inning,
facing the Royals most dangerous hitters, was a now obsolete masterclass by
Terry Francona in milking the platoon advantage to the maximum possible extent:
lefty Nick Hagadone to get Mike Moustakas, righty Bryan Shaw to get Lorenzo
Cain, lefty Marc Rzepczynski to get Eric Hosmer. Three batters, three pitchers,
three outs, never to be seen again.</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8304036069818909705.post-29880245010827108102024-01-16T15:16:00.001-05:002024-01-16T15:16:00.142-05:00#334---CLE @ TEX, 6/6/2014<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi468TJrfzd-29QlAvAnY-N7XOexttj9CWSpOOYreG4tT7ZMT3jTb3HQEGg74SrbX51ll5UV5pJbnN9BCfIWvoD4u1dZMKc1uht7rI2QioxvCQGmBx7A-kkedYuwszvzk0Vs8gtBMzvKIp8-dAlias9X0gfkldeudI4V44POss12wIeYjJmloFMJEzf/s2185/334.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2185" data-original-width="1681" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi468TJrfzd-29QlAvAnY-N7XOexttj9CWSpOOYreG4tT7ZMT3jTb3HQEGg74SrbX51ll5UV5pJbnN9BCfIWvoD4u1dZMKc1uht7rI2QioxvCQGmBx7A-kkedYuwszvzk0Vs8gtBMzvKIp8-dAlias9X0gfkldeudI4V44POss12wIeYjJmloFMJEzf/s320/334.jpg" width="246" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>The Rangers jumped on Trevor Bauer for four runs in the second, but a

driven affair. The Indians jumped Eric Milton for two in the first, but the
inning ended with Victor Martinez out trying to score from first on a double.
Scott Elarton promptly yielded back-to-back homers to Ken Griffey (the 515th of
his career) and Joe Randa to leadoff the second, but Jose Hernandez put
Cleveland back on top with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the frame. The Reds
came right back with a tally in the third, but Hernandez’ second leadoff homer
in the fourth put the Tribe back in front.</p>
<p>From there, each team managed only a couple of baserunners until Griffey hit
his second homer to tie it in the eighth of Scott Sauerbeck. Interestingly,
fellow lefty Arthur Rhodes relieved Sauberbeck after the homer. In the ninth,
Felipe Lopez drove home the winning run for Cincinnati with a double off Bob
Howry. Edwin Encarnacion was 0-4 making his major league debut.</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8304036069818909705.post-3835480264686974192023-11-07T15:04:00.003-05:002023-11-07T15:04:00.151-05:00#324---CLE @ NYN, 6/17/2004<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgFpZehvHwQliQ2e1bNP0MOKVXAmEJlWgldJ8wWyPiRC0nY0Am28E23tSKIopCOWNtO9uzzYtu3stCGjVxFQ7StEMx-qgBAdy_cxWPz47AyDauxQ-uuQ2ww6k7988CuvjorZpVGONqNfNEfX1mWs4o9a3Z_lW0FL2ql1G4Ex-duJpbUayALuDO1qDi/s2171/324.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2171" data-original-width="1696" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgFpZehvHwQliQ2e1bNP0MOKVXAmEJlWgldJ8wWyPiRC0nY0Am28E23tSKIopCOWNtO9uzzYtu3stCGjVxFQ7StEMx-qgBAdy_cxWPz47AyDauxQ-uuQ2ww6k7988CuvjorZpVGONqNfNEfX1mWs4o9a3Z_lW0FL2ql1G4Ex-duJpbUayALuDO1qDi/s320/324.jpg" width="250" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>Jae Seo and Scott Elarton each pitched four shutout innings, but a nearly
two-hour rain delay knocked them out with very similar lines:</p>

<p>Elarton: 4 IP, 1 H, 1 W, 4 K, 53 pitches</p>
<p>The Mets bullpen outpitched the Indians bullpen, with the Tribe’s allowing
at least one run in each inning and the Mets tossing zeroes until the ninth.</p>
<p>A couple substitutes to note: Gonzalez pinch-hit for the pitcher’s spot
leading off the Cleveland sixth. My first thought was that this was Andy
Gonzalez, but I knew he had come along much later, so I had to look up that it
was Raul Gonzalez, who appeared in seven games for the ‘04 Indians and had
slipped my memory. It was his final big league stint; his most extended playing
time had come with the ‘03 Mets. And the recently deceased Gerald Williams,
serving as a defensive replacement for Cliff Floyd in the top of the ninth.</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8304036069818909705.post-66571028079369795712023-10-31T15:03:00.002-04:002023-10-31T15:03:00.141-04:00#323---CLE @ DET, 6/17/2003<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgua3aC9dCqoT6r4NwjoRzSdwIQCam3Lgo-1MKbJhPEx1Zk2ugSSE4yrL5poH6Y8sfxH3y9IQaX7P2VSTiwFomWCAUbIK5NVJNk2xMlFa3j4n3XYuCbWKHhEevGtYIRmWCX2hwOKNFd_4j1W3pKRfiQUOgkxRNyOFZLvmQ585eZ6ls-2WVVgmHyil5X/s2191/323.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2191" data-original-width="1677" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgua3aC9dCqoT6r4NwjoRzSdwIQCam3Lgo-1MKbJhPEx1Zk2ugSSE4yrL5poH6Y8sfxH3y9IQaX7P2VSTiwFomWCAUbIK5NVJNk2xMlFa3j4n3XYuCbWKHhEevGtYIRmWCX2hwOKNFd_4j1W3pKRfiQUOgkxRNyOFZLvmQ585eZ6ls-2WVVgmHyil5X/s320/323.jpg" width="245" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>The Indians won this game with a fourth-inning homer barrage off Adam

against Danys Baez that included a homer by long-time Indian Sandy Alomar. But
the roof caved in during the fifth, and then the floor collapsed, and Ritchie
was swallowed by the depths of the earth. The trouble started with Jose
Valentin’s throwing error, but after Ricky Gutierrez doubled, Ritchie fanned
Russel Branyan for the second out and was close to escaping with limited
damage. Einar Diaz walked, Chris Magruder singled in a run, Matt Lawton walked
to load the bases, Omar Vizquel drove in two with a single, another run came
home when Ray Durham mishandled what would have been a force out at second, and
then Jim Thome hit a three run homer. Ritchie coaxed a Travis Fryman flyout,
but he had coughed up eight runs on 44 pitches in the frame.</p>
<p>Baez would wind up allowing four runs over six innings, walking three and
striking out six, and the Indians bullpen finished up with three innings, with
one hit and six strikeouts.</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8304036069818909705.post-90400324168441217792023-10-17T15:01:00.002-04:002023-10-17T15:01:00.145-04:00#321---MIN @ CLE, 6/21/2001<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgef3B0dJH3C7lR7zsLjht4bmUXIHaB-JYj41GyuaZq1VBLXZXL6A5cHmhgNkvwStXw63C7oYwAi3AvGxJtD6Jqe4vtk-5m_p8v6D-1HZKgLjGap-_9_GBTIUIQ2KUEst7TlawFUbGVPQ4OLuraln--1-kQCsaZRWTQAK3j51uTKc4QJCcUJVE9Y42z/s2198/321.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2198" data-original-width="1689" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgef3B0dJH3C7lR7zsLjht4bmUXIHaB-JYj41GyuaZq1VBLXZXL6A5cHmhgNkvwStXw63C7oYwAi3AvGxJtD6Jqe4vtk-5m_p8v6D-1HZKgLjGap-_9_GBTIUIQ2KUEst7TlawFUbGVPQ4OLuraln--1-kQCsaZRWTQAK3j51uTKc4QJCcUJVE9Y42z/s320/321.jpg" width="246" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>Juan Gonzalez launched a three-run shot off JC Romero in the first, but the
Twins answered in the second with a two-run shot from Torii Hunter and a
three-run blast from AJ Pierzynski. Cleveland tied it before Romero could even
record an out on former Twin Marty Cordova’s two-run homer. Einar Diaz doubled,
Kenny Lofton dropped down a bunt single, and then the it started raining. After
a forty-one minute delay, Johan Santana was summoned in relief. Diaz scored on
a Santana throwing error and Lofton on a Cristian Guzman error to make it 7-3.
From that point, Santana pitched mostly to contact, allowing two runs while
walking and fanning one over five innings. Steve Woodard replaced Jaret Wright
on the mound for the Indians after the delay, and the run he allowed in the
fifth closed out the scoring. With two outs in the top of the seventh, the game
was delayed again, and this time was not restarted.</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
